Penthouse overlooking the lions of Artis
High above the city life of Amsterdam, directly opposite the lion enclosure of the Artis Zoo, Arnout and Sanne have created a home that feels both serene and striking. Introduced to Format by interior architect Loes Slokkers, the couple came to us with a clear wish. They wanted a kitchen that was not only practical and fully equipped but also rich in atmosphere and design detail. The brief was simple yet ambitious. With carte blanche, we were able to explore every possibility.

The penthouse is defined by glass walls and an open floorplan, anchored by a structural column in the centre of the space. Rather than concealing it, we chose to embrace it. Wrapped in dark walnut and fitted with open shelving, the column now forms a striking architectural feature. The generous island, partially connected to the column, establishes the kitchen as the natural heart of the home.
CLASSIC AND BOLD
Dark walnut sets the tone and lends the kitchen both gravitas and warmth. The island was hand-brushed to create a subtle striped texture, while brass handles and moulded detailing add depth and character. The result strikes a balance between classical elegance and contemporary boldness, giving the kitchen its distinct identity.
Function was just as important as form. State-of-the-art appliances by V-Zug, including a wine climate cabinet, steam oven, warming drawer and spacious fridge-freezer, ensure the kitchen meets professional standards. A ceramic travertine worktop crowns the design, adding texture and a timeless feel. The mix of walnut, brass and stone creates a balanced and rich look that becomes even more beautiful over time.
"It was a real pleasure working with the talented team at Format. From the design process to the execution and installation, everything was spot-on."
KITCHEN AS A CENTREPIECE
For Arnout and Sanne, the kitchen had to do more than perform. It needed to embody the atmosphere they wanted their home to radiate. Positioned at the centre of their penthouse, the space is designed for gathering, entertaining and daily rituals alike. Morning coffee with sunlight pouring through the windows, evenings with friends around the island, or quiet moments overlooking the lions of Artis. This kitchen adapts to every rhythm of their lives.
